Akatsi (V/R), July 16, GNA – The Akatsi South Municipal Assembly has inaugurated its District Road Safety Committee (DRSC) to strengthen road safety management and coordinate efforts to reduce road crashes in the municipality.
The establishment of the committee forms part of directives by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) to decentralise road safety management and encourage greater stakeholder participation in tackling road safety challenges at the local level.
Mr Francis Lotsu, Internal Auditor of the Assembly, who presided over the inaugural meeting on behalf of Mr Issah Umar, Municipal Coordinating Director and Chairperson of the Committee, said the DRSC would serve as a platform for planning, implementing and monitoring road safety interventions tailored to the municipality’s needs.
He said decentralising road safety activities would enable the committee to respond promptly to emerging challenges while promoting community ownership and participation in efforts to make roads safer.
Mr Lotsu said the committee would collaborate with relevant stakeholders to intensify public education and support initiatives aimed at reducing road crashes, injuries and fatalities.
Members of the committee are Mr Frank Arami Dayi of the Feeder Roads Department, Mr Edward Doe Adade, Assembly Member for the Tatorome-Fiato Electoral Area, Chief Inspector Faruk Merigah of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, and Mama Fomeabu II, representative of the Traditional Council.
Other members include Ms Justine Tsekumah of the Municipal Health Directorate, Ms Rosalyn Ankomah Agyemang, Acting Transport Officer and Focal Person, Mr Francis Klutse, Transport Union Representative, and Mr Emmanuel Agbaxode, former Volta Regional Chairman of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), representing the media.
The committee is expected to provide leadership in promoting safer roads, safer vehicles, responsible road user behaviour and effective post-crash response measures within the municipality.
Its mandate covers all categories of road users, including motorcyclists, and seeks to integrate road safety concerns into the Assembly’s programmes, policies and development initiatives.
Mr Daniel Dagba, Municipal Chief Executive for Akatsi South, attended the inauguration ceremony as a special guest.
The committee is expected to work closely with key institutions and stakeholders to develop practical interventions to improve road safety outcomes in the municipality.
