Accra, Aug 6, GNA – Government is holding a National Interfaith Memorial Service at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), to commemorate the first anniversary of the August 6, military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight distinguished Ghanaians.
President John Dramani Mahama is leading the commemoration, which forms part of activities marking the anniversary of the national tragedy.
The service has brought together Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Members of Parliament, Ministers of State, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, traditional and religious leaders, family members of the deceased and other mourners.
The military helicopter crashed at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025, while carrying the high-level government delegation to Obuasi to launch the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP), a flagship initiative aimed at formalising small-scale mining through cooperatives and strengthening the national fight against illegal mining (galamsey).
All eight occupants died in the crash.
They included Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister for Defence; Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation and Member of Parliament for Tamale Central; Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, Deputy National Security Coordinator; Dr Samuel Sarpong, National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); and Mr Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
The others were Wing Commander Peter Bafemi Anala, Flight Lieutenant Manaen Twum Ampadu and Flight Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The victims were accorded a State Funeral at the Black Star Square in Accra on August 15, 2025, attended by President Mahama, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, the security services, traditional and religious leaders, family members and hundreds of mourners before their final interment.
The National Interfaith Memorial Service is expected to feature Christian and Islamic prayers, tributes to the deceased and reflections on their dedicated service to the nation.
