Accra, Aug. 6, GNA – The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is mobilising to stage a demonstration today under the theme, “Democracy Under Attack.”
This is to protest what it describes as “threats to constitutional governance, the rule of law and the independence of state institutions.”
The protest is intended to draw national attention to its concerns over alleged political persecution, selective justice, abuse of state institutions and growing intimidation of opposition members.
Hundreds of party supporters, executives and sympathisers from across the country are expected to participate in the demonstration through designated streets.
The NPP leadership will present copies of their petition to the Supreme Court, the Presidency and Parliament.
According to the Party, the petitions will call on the country’s constitutional institutions to uphold justice, due process, accountability and institutional independence, which are fundamental to sustaining Ghana’s democratic order.
The demonstration also follows the acquittal and discharge of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, which NPP alleges raises questions about consistency and impartiality in the administration of justice.
Mrs Attionu, who was CEO from 2013 to 2016, had her High Court conviction and 10-year prison sentence overturned on Thursday July 30.
She was convicted on multiple counts of financial crime in absentia.
The former CEO had left Ghana in 2019 after obtaining court permission to travel abroad for a medical check-up but did not return to continue with her trial.
Mrs Attionu was, however, extradited from the United States to Ghana on June 9, 2026, the first such extradition between the two countries since 2009.
The appellate court acquitted and discharged her, ruling that the prosecution failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt.
Dr Dominic Ayine, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, has, however, said his office had appealed the Court of Appeal’s decision that acquitted and discharged Mrs Attionu.
Mr Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of Government Communication has explained that the former CEO of MASLOC was in prison custody pending the hearing of the appeal.
The NPP has also cited what it describes as the “arbitrary arrest, detention and harassment” of some of its members by state investigative and security agencies.
It has alleged that such actions were politically motivated.
Mr Henry Nana Boakye, National Organiser of the NPP, said the demonstration was to provide a constitutional platform for citizens to express concerns about developments affecting the country’s democratic institutions.
“Our objective is neither confrontation nor disorder. Our objective is constitutional engagement,” he noted.
He said participants would assemble at the Community Centre before marching through the Efua Sutherland area and the Ako Adjei Interchange to the Jubilee House.
Mr Boakye expressed confidence that the demonstration would attract a large turnout and urged participants to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the exercise.
He also stated that the Ghana Police Service had been notified of the demonstration and that security arrangements had been agreed upon to ensure a peaceful event.
Security personnel are being deployed along the approved route to maintain public order, regulate vehicular traffic and provide protection for demonstrators and other road users.
