Wontumi’s new lawyer files bid to defer Samreboi Illegal mining judgement

Accra, June 26, GNA – Mr Samuel Atta Akyea, counsel for Bernard Antwi Boasiako and Akonta Mining Company Limited, has filed a motion at the High Court seeking deferment of judgement in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

The motion, filed on June 22, 2026, prayes the court to defer its judgement, which is scheduled for July 3, 2026.

The court had earlier directed parties in the matter to file written addresses, if any, by June 24, 2026.

Prior to the filing of the motion, counsel for Boasiako, Mr Andy Appiah-Kubi, had filed a notice of withdrawal of service, after which Mr Atta Akyea entered the case as newly appointed counsel.

In the motion for deferment of judgement, Mr Atta Akyea stated that he had applied for certified copies of the record of proceedings, but same had not been provided.

He said it was necessary for him to familiarise himself with the record of proceedings, undertake a thorough perusal and research, and file credible and competent written submissions on behalf of the applicants.

Mr Atta Akyea further contended that in the absence of the complete record of proceedings, it would be difficult to properly acquaint himself with the case in order to discharge his professional obligations.

He maintained that granting the application would facilitate the effective exercise of constitutional rights and secure a fair trial.

Mr Atta Akyea said the application was not intended to obstruct, delay or frustrate the administration of justice.

“The sole purpose of this application is to enable me obtain and peruse the record of proceedings before judgement was delivered.”

Mr Atta Akyea said the grant of the application would enable him file the necessary processes for the court’s consideration.

He noted that his clients were facing serious criminal charges, and the outcome of the matter may have serious consequences on their liberty, reputation, rights and interests.

Mr Atta Akyea argued that granting the application would enhance public confidence in the administration of justice.

Hearing of the application has been slated for June 29, 2026.
