Tema, June 09, GNA – A waste collector has been handed over to the Tema Community One Police after he was caught allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Tema Community One, Site zero.

The suspect, identified only as Musah, was reportedly caught at about 03:00 hours on Tuesday, while disposing bags of rubbish into a gutter in the community.
Residents who witnessed the act quickly alerted local authorities, leading to his arrest.

Mr Charles Amos, Assembly Member for the Padmore Electoral Area, said he received a distress call from residents around 03:00 hours and immediately rushed to the scene, adding that upon arrival, he saw several bags of refuse tied in black plastic bags dumped into the drainage system under the cover of darkness.

Mr Amos told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview that the rubbish collector said he picked the rubbish from Community Two, claiming that he intended to change the bags before transporting the waste elsewhere.

He noted that the suspect was subsequently handed over to the Tema Community One Police Station for further investigations and expressed worry over what he described as the irresponsible actions of some individuals who continue to undermine efforts aimed at keeping the community clean and healthy.

The assembly man said residents, community leaders and sanitation stakeholders have invested considerable time and resources into maintaining environmental cleanliness, but such actions threaten to reverse the gains made.

He said blocked drains could prevent the free flow of water during heavy rains, increasing the risk of floods and creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
