UGA alumni to expand chapters across 16 Regions

By Jibril Abdul Mumuni

Accra, June 20, GNA – The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGA), is seeking to expand chapters across the 16 regions of Ghana to deepen participation and strengthen the association’s national reach.

Mr Felix Addo, Chairman, said the move formed part of efforts to decentralise the operations of the alumni body and make it more inclusive for members outside Accra.

Speaking at the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), Mr Addo commended the outgoing executives for what he described as an “A+ performance.”

The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGA) has over the years played a significant role in supporting the university through infrastructure projects, student welfare initiatives, and alumni engagement activities.

However, much of its operations have remained concentrated in Accra, limiting participation from members in other parts of the country.

The renewed push to establish regional chapters is therefore aimed at decentralising its activities and broadening its national presence.

He noted that although the alumni body had chalked significant successes, its activities remained largely centralised, making it necessary to establish vibrant regional chapters across the country.

“As the parent alumni association, we are required to have active regional structures. This will ensure that alumni across all regions are fully integrated into the activities of the association,” he stated.

He cited the provision of student relaxation centres and progress on an alumni event centre as key achievements.

“We will continue from where they left off, complete ongoing projects, and strengthen our structures to serve members better,” he said.

Mr Addo indicated that completing the alumni event centre would remain a priority under his administration, while efforts would be intensified to address structural gaps within the association.

Supporting the initiative, Prof Yaw Oheneba-Sekyi, First Vice Chairperson, who is expected to spearhead the regional expansion drive, said the association would leverage regional learning centres to mobilise and engage members nationwide.

“Our strategy is to reach out to alumni in all parts of the country, bring them together, and create strong platforms for networking, mentorship, and development.” Prof Oheneba-Sekyi said.

He added that the initiative would also help identify and connect the numerous University of Ghana alumni who were not actively involved in the association.

Meanwhile, the AGM ushered in a team of experienced professionals to lead the association. Key executives include Ms Brenda Semevo Afari as General Secretary and Mr Kojo Baah-Parry as Treasurer, alongside other members of the executive team.

Additional elected members to support the leadership include Dr Adrian Nii Odoi Oddoye, a medical practitioner; Dr George Tsey Mensah Kwadzo, an academic and agribusiness expert; and Mrs Adelaide Mary Benneh, a corporate governance professional.

The elections also featured the nomination of several distinguished individuals for various leadership positions, reflecting the association’s commitment to competence, diversity, and strong governance.

The University of Ghana Alumni Association (UGA) is a body made up of former students of the University of Ghana who come together to support the school and stay connected after graduation.

The association provides a platform for members to network, mentor students, and contribute to the development of the university through various projects and initiatives.
