Lashibi, June 23, GNA – The Tema West Municipal Assembly (TWMA) has presented business equipment, educational support, medical assistance and financial aid valued at GH¢127,300 to 20 persons with disabilities to enhance their economic independence and improve their livelihoods.

Mr Ludwig Teye Totimeh, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), made the presentation during the Assembly’s second disability fund disbursement ceremony for 2026.

The beneficiaries, drawn from communities including Adjei Kojo, Lashibi and Sakumono, comprised 12 females and eight males, seven of whom were children.

Addressing beneficiaries, traditional leaders, AssemblyMmembers and other stakeholders at the event, Mr Totimeh said empowering persons with disabilities should be regarded as an investment in human capital and community development rather than an act of charity.

He explained that the support packages were tailored to the specific needs of the beneficiaries and included cash assistance, industrial working tools, educational support and specialised medical aid.

“The objective is to provide beneficiaries with the resources needed to become economically self-reliant and contribute meaningfully to society,” he said.

Mr Totimeh noted that the latest disbursement represented the fourteen batch of beneficiaries supported by the Disability Fund Management Committee since the programme was introduced in the municipality.

According to him, records from 2018 to 2026 show that the assembly had processed 526 applications and provided various forms of assistance to 300 persons with disabilities.

He cited the case of a beneficiary who had successfully completed forklift operation training through the programme and said efforts were underway to secure employment for him.

The MCE expressed confidence that the intervention would improve the living conditions of the beneficiaries and help reduce economic barriers faced by persons with disabilities.

He urged beneficiaries to use the resources responsibly and for their intended purposes to ensure sustainable outcomes.

Mr Totimeh also appealed for increased allocations to the disability fund to enable the assembly to extend support to more eligible applicants across the municipality.

The beneficiaries expressed gratitude to the assembly for the support and pledged to make good use of the resources to improve their livelihoods and support their families.
