Kumasi, June 5, GNA – Telecel Ghana has called for increased public support in tackling the growing problem of fibre cuts and theft of telecommunications infrastructure.

According to the company, the trend continues to disrupt services and impose significant costs on the telecommunications industry.

Mr. Komla Buami, Director, External Affairs at Telecel Ghana, described the fibre destruction and infrastructure theft as major threats to reliable connectivity throughout the country.

Speaking at a media roundtable discussion in Kumasi, he said while road construction activities remained a leading cause of fibre cuts, deliberate acts of vandalism and theft were increasingly contributing to service disruptions.

He noted that theft of fibre chamber covers has also emerged as a significant concern, creating operational difficulties and exposing critical infrastructure to damage.

According to Mr. Buami, industry wide losses attributed to fibre cuts have exceeded billions of dollars over the past four years, adding that averagely the company experiences between three and nine fibre cuts daily.

The company has continually engaged the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Ministry of Communications and other stakeholders to reduce the incidence of fibre cuts and protect critical infrastructure nationwide.

He said while Telecel continued to strengthen security at its installations, security agencies must include telecommunications facilities into their routine surveillance operations to reduce the challenge.

Touching on Telecel investment drive, he announced that the company has selected June as “Ashanti Week” – a month-long programme aimed at deepening investments, partnerships and community engagement activities across the Ashanti Region.

The activities which will be led by the Telecel Ghana Foundation includ the launch of coding and robotics programme, hospital support, Ashanti Golf Tournament as well as promotional and special packages for customers.
