Aboabogya (Ash), June 3, GNA – Residents of Aboabogya in the Afigya Kwabre South Municipality have welcomed the commencement of work on the government’s 24-Hour Economy model market and commercial centre project, describing it as a transformative initiative expected to boost trade and economic activity in the area.
The sod-cutting ceremony for the project generated widespread excitement within the community, attracting chiefs, traders, residents, municipal officials, and other stakeholders who gathered to witness the official start of construction.
Many traders and business operators expressed optimism that the new facility would provide a more organised environment for commercial activities, create employment opportunities for young people, and improve access to goods and services for residents.
The project is part of the Government’s 24-Hour Economy initiative, which aims to promote continuous business operations and economic productivity beyond traditional working hours.
The market is expected to allow traders to operate throughout the day and night, offering greater convenience for customers and workers who require goods and services outside normal trading hours. It is also designed to maximise the use of infrastructure and commercial facilities by creating a safe and conducive environment for night-time economic activities through improved lighting and organised trading spaces.
Speaking at the event, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ms. Patricia Pearl Ankrah, expressed confidence that the project would significantly enhance commercial activity and strengthen the local economy upon completion.
She said the market and commercial centre would bring business opportunities closer to residents, attract investment, and address challenges faced by traders operating in informal and unplanned spaces.
According to her, the project demonstrates the government’s commitment to infrastructure development, community transformation, and improving livelihoods within the municipality.
Ms. Ankrah urged residents, particularly traders, to support the initiative and cooperate with officials to ensure its successful implementation.
She also commended the Chief of Aboabogya, Nana Wiafe Akenten Amoah II, for his commitment to the project, noting that he voluntarily released five acres of land for its construction without demanding compensation from the Assembly. She described the gesture as exemplary leadership and a strong commitment to community development.
Nana Amoah II, together with other traditional leaders, performed customary rites and purification rituals at the project site to invoke blessings and ensure the smooth execution of the project.
He appealed to residents and stakeholders to continue supporting the initiative, stressing that its successful completion would bring significant benefits to the entire community.
The contract for the project has been awarded to Eco-Engineers and Planners, with completion expected within 24 months.
Project Manager Mr. Frank Antwi assured residents that construction work would be carried out according to approved specifications and completed within the stipulated timeframe.
