Accra, June 11, GNA – The Ministry of Health has welcomed a court ruling in a case involving the assault of a midwife at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the judgment as a strong affirmation of the need to protect health workers from abuse and violence.
A statement issued by the Ministry said it fully supported the conviction of Mr Desmond Bosomtwe, who was found guilty of assaulting the health worker.
The court imposed a fine of GH¢1,200.00 on the convict, placed him on a bond of good behaviour, restricted his access to the health facility and ordered him to pay GH¢5,000.00 in compensation to the victim, the statement said.
The ruling, it said, sent a clear message that violence against health personnel would not be tolerated and that offenders would face the full force of the law.
It commended the Ghana Police Service for its role in ensuring that the case was thoroughly investigated and successfully prosecuted.
“The court’s decision underscores the importance of safeguarding healthcare professionals as they carry out their duties in service to the public,” the statement said.
It reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to supporting measures that promoted professionalism, accountability and the safety of all health workers across the country.
It stressed that creating a safe and respectful working environment for healthcare personnel remained essential to the delivery of quality healthcare services.
The statement urged the public to treat health workers with dignity and respect and to use the appropriate channels to address grievances, rather than resorting to violence or intimidation.
The outcome of the case, it noted, should serve as a deterrent to individuals who engaged in abusive conduct against health professionals.
