Kumasi, June 17, GNA – The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has commenced the demolition of unauthorised structures and the removal of trees along the Santasi Roundabout-Asokwa Interchange corridor to pave the way for the construction of a dual-carriage road.
The exercise, which began on Monday, forms part of preparatory works for the dualisation of the stretch, a major road infrastructure project, aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving mobility within the metropolis.
Mr. Richard Ofori-Agyeman Boadi, Mayor of Kumasi, led a team of KMA officials, city engineers and security personnel to supervise the exercise.
The team demolished wooden kiosks, billboards, metal containers and makeshift stalls, while also removing trees that had encroached on the road reservation.
Addressing the media, Mr. Boadi said the Assembly had served notices to all affected occupants and allowed adequate time for them to relocate before the commencement of the exercise.
He described the project as critical to the city’s development agenda and stressed the need to clear all impediments to facilitate its smooth execution.
“This road is critical to Kumasi’s development.
We cannot allow unauthorised structures to delay a project that will benefit the entire city,” he stated.
The Mayor said the demolition exercise would continue in phases over the coming weeks to ensure that the entire right of way was cleared for construction works.
He cautioned traders, artisans and other occupants against returning to the cleared areas, warning that offenders would face prosecution.

Residents and motorists have long expressed concerns over persistent traffic congestion along the Santasi-Asokwa corridor, particularly during peak periods.
The dual-carriage road, when completed, is expected to significantly reduce travel time and improve traffic flow between Santasi, Ahodwo, Asokwa and the Kumasi Central Business District.
