Kadjebi (O/R), June 3, GNA – The Kadjebi District Assembly in the Oti Region will on Thursday, June 4, observe National Sanitation Day in four Electoral Areas within the district capital, Kadjebi, as part of efforts to promote environmental cleanliness and protect public health.
The exercise, scheduled to take place from 0600 hours to 1000 hours, will be coordinated by Assembly Members and Unit Committee Members in their respective Electoral Areas.
Residents have been urged to actively participate in the clean-up exercise, which forms part of the Government’s renewed commitment to sanitation and environmental management.
A letter titled “District National Sanitation Day Observation in Kadjebi,” dated June 2 and signed by Mr Innocent Komla Gavua, the Kadjebi District Coordinating Director, indicated that all residents were expected to take part in the exercise.
The letter, sighted by the Ghana News Agency (GNA), stated that commercial activities, including the operation of shops, chop bars and vehicular movements, would not be permitted during the stipulated period to ensure full participation.
It further warned that persons who fail to participate in the clean-up exercise would be committing an offence and, upon conviction, could be liable to a fine of GHS1,800.00, a term of imprisonment of not less than six months and not more than nine months, or both.
Mr Gavua called on residents, opinion leaders, youth groups, market women, transport operators and other stakeholders to support the initiative and contribute to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
He noted that poor sanitation remained a major challenge in many communities and stressed the need for collective action to keep surroundings clean and prevent sanitation-related diseases.
Some residents who spoke to GNA welcomed the initiative and expressed their readiness to participate in the exercise to improve sanitation conditions in their communities.
The National Sanitation Day exercise is expected to involve the desilting of drains, clearing of refuse dumps, cleaning of public spaces and removal of overgrown weeds in various communities across the district.
The Assembly expressed confidence that the exercise would help foster a culture of cleanliness, civic responsibility and environmental stewardship among residents.
