Berlin, June 2, (dpa) – Iranian media reported on Tuesday that negotiations between
Tehran and Washington have come to an end, after weeks of stalled talks and
amid the ongoing conflict in Lebanon.
No talks between Tehran and Washington have been held for several days, the Fars news agency, which is linked to Iran’s Islamic Republican Guard Corps (IRGC), reported. On Monday, the Tasnim News Agency, which is also close to the IRGC, reported that indirect talks with the US had ended as a result of continuing Israeli attacks in Lebanon, where Israeli forces have been targeting the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia.
There would be no further talks for as long as hostilities continued in Lebanon, Tasnim reported. On Monday evening, Iran’s chief negotiator and speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, posted on X that if Israeli aggression against Lebanon continued, not only would the path of negotiation be halted, but that there would be “direct confrontation with the enemy.”
US President Donald Trump, however, said on his Truth Social platform that talks with Tehran were continuing at a “rapid pace.” Trump also announced a halt to fighting in Lebanon. Talks between Israel and Lebanon are to continue in Washington on Wednesday.
