Taviefe (V/R), June 6, GNA – Mr James Gunu, the Volta Regional Minister has launched this year’s Tree for Life Project at Taviefe Senior High School in the Ho Municipality of the Volta Region.

The project forms part of the government’s flagship environmental initiative under the leadership of President John Dramani Mahama aimed at protecting the environment.

Mr Gunu said the region is expected to plant 300,000 seedlings to support efforts at combating climate change and protecting the environment for future generations.

He encouraged citizens in the region to incorporate tree planting into their culture and to nurture them, emphasising the significant role of trees in mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Gunu described tree planting as a vital community resilience and disaster mitigation strategy and therefore called for a collective effort to sustain it.

He urged traditional authorities, assembly members, and citizens to plant trees to serve as protective windbreaks against heavy storms and to prevent environmental degradation.

Mr Gunu emphasised that tree planting was one of the surest long-term strategies to protect vulnerable communities from extreme weather and windstorms.

Mr Henry Kudiabor, the Volta Regional Manager of the Forestry Commission, told GNA that the region is distinctive in its management of timber resources due to the little sawmill activity, and he urged the residents to persist in their environmental protection efforts.
