Tema, June 02, GNA — The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) says deliberate policies aimed at promoting gender inclusion are increasing the number of women occupying technical and operational positions within the port sector.
Madam Abena Serwaa Opoku Fosu, Marketing and Public Affairs Manager of the Port of Tema, said management had adopted a gender policy to ensure equal opportunities in recruitment, training, and promotion.
Madam Opoku Fosu, who is also the National President of the Network for Professional Women in Maritime and Port Sectors in West and Central Africa, said the policy was encouraging more women to apply for positions traditionally dominated by men.
Speaking on a media forum powered by the GPHA, she said the authority now has female security officers, firefighters, crane operators, and marine professionals working in operational departments.
She noted that the number of women working in technical and logistics-related positions had increased significantly over the years.
She said management continued to support capacity-building programmes, leadership development initiatives, mentoring activities, and professional networks aimed at empowering women within the organisation.
The maritime professional stressed that gender diversity contributed to innovation, stronger teamwork, and improved decision-making within organisations.
She called on employers across the maritime sector to focus on competence and provide equal opportunities for women to contribute to industry growth and excellence.
