Accra, June 4, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has successfully concluded a search and rescue operation following the collapse of a one-storey building at Adenta Newsite in Accra during a downpour on Wednesday evening.
A statement issued by the Service and copied to the Ghana News Agency said a distress call was received at 1836 hours, reporting the collapse of the structure located near Da Yesu Ase Supermarket.
In response, rescue teams from the GNFS National Headquarters, supported by personnel from the Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations, were swiftly deployed to the scene to begin emergency operations.
It said five occupants comprising three adults and two children were trapped beneath the rubble when the building collapsed. The victims were identified as Margaret Kpeli, believed to be in her late 30s; Fred Atagba, also believed to be in his late 30s; Solomon; Seyeram Dzigda, a child; and David Dzigda, also a child.
Through a coordinated rescue effort, four of the trapped occupants – Fred Atagba, Solomon, Seyeram Dzigda, and David Dzigda – were successfully rescued alive, although they sustained various injuries.
The injured victims were transported to the 37 Military Hospital for medical treatment and further assessment.
Intensive efforts continued in the search for the remaining victim, Margaret Kpeli, who was eventually retrieved from beneath the rubble in an unconscious state.
She was subsequently handed over to the Adenta District Police for preservation and further investigation. The GNFS reported that the search and rescue mission was officially concluded at 22:54 hours on Thursday.
Rescue teams also managed to save a dog that had been trapped in the debris.
The Service commended residents and community members who assisted in the initial rescue efforts prior to the arrival of emergency responders.
It also expressed appreciation to personnel from the National Headquarters, Legon and Abelemkpe Fire Stations, the Ghana Police Service, medical teams, and other supporting agencies whose collaboration contributed to the successful operation.
The incident occurred during heavy rains that affected parts of the Greater Accra Region on Wednesday evening running through to Thursday dawn.
