Ghana records highest monthly rainfall since 1995 as June floods kill 12 – Interior Minister

Accra, June 30, GNA — Ghana recorded its highest monthly rainfall in June 2026, with 593.2 millimetres, Alhaji Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Minister for the Interior, has told Parliament.

Addressing the House on Tuesday, the Minister attributed the devastating floods that struck parts of the Greater Accra Region on Monday, June 29, to an “unprecedented volume of rainfall.”

“Mr Speaker, the country recorded 593.2 millimetres of rainfall in June – the highest monthly total ever recorded since rainfall data began being tracked in 1995,” he said.

According to the Minister, Monday’s downpour alone produced 169.2 millimetres of rainfall within 24 hours.

“Mr Speaker, that makes it the fourth-highest daily rainfall recorded in the country since 1995.

“The closest was in 2002 and that was 420.6 millimetres and the other one was 2015, 380.3 millimetres,” he added.

Alhaji Mohammed-Mubarak acknowledged that human activities, including indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains and construction on waterways, contributed to the flooding.

However, he said the sheer volume of rain would have overwhelmed drainage systems regardless.

“Naturally, it clearly shows that even if we had everything right, the kind of rains that we received in June and yesterday would have necessarily created some overflow and created some problem for us,” he stated.

The Minister further disclosed that authorities had received indications around midnight prior to the rainfall that weather conditions were expected to worsen, although the full magnitude could not be accurately predicted at the time.

The remarks come as government agencies continue rescue, relief and recovery operations following the floods.

According to the Minister, the disaster claimed 12 lives, left seven people missing, displaced 7,761 households, and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and public infrastructure across the Greater Accra Region.
