Accra, June 30, GNA – The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has advised Ghanaians living in South Africa to remain vigilant and take precautionary measures ahead of a June 30 deadline amid the possibility of protests and disruptions in parts of the country.
The deadline was announced by the group “March and March” and its affiliated organisations.
A public advisory issued by the Mission said the precaution had become necessary due to the potential for demonstrations that could affect public safety in some areas.
The High Commission urged members of the Ghanaian community to prioritise their safety by remaining indoors, particularly avoiding areas including the central business districts, transport hubs, informal trading areas and other locations where protests were likely to occur.
It also advised Ghanaian business owners to close their establishments during the period and avoid unnecessary movement.
The Mission further cautioned Ghanaians against engaging in confrontations or provocative discussions, including on social media, that could expose them to danger.
It urged them to ensure that their passports, residence permits and other identification documents were readily available at all times.
The High Commission said its emergency telephone lines would remain operational throughout the period to provide assistance and receive reports from Ghanaian nationals requiring support.
The numbers are 072 514 5476, 072 614 3856, 072 415 3373, 076 771 8726 and 071 985 8042.
The Mission encouraged members of the Ghanaian community to remain calm, law-abiding, security-conscious and to cooperate fully with local authorities.
It also urged them to rely only on credible official sources for information and refrain from circulating unverified reports or rumours.
The High Commission reaffirmed its commitment to the protection and welfare of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa and said it would continue to provide updates as the situation evolved.
