Four remanded over police officer’s death

Accra, June 18, GNA- The Adabraka District Court has remanded four persons into lawful custody for their alleged involvement in the murder of a police officer at Ablekuma in Accra.

Lance Corporal Calistus Amoah, on June 14, 2023, was shot several times in broad daylight on board a Bullion Van by armed men at Ablekuma Star Oil Filling station.

The four accused persons are Mohammed Musah, also known as On Board, a 24-year-old excavator mechanic, Muntawakilu Adamu, aka Hero, a 40-year-old excavator mechanic, Mohammed Amin Rashid aka Iddi Amin, 28-year-old trader, and Abila Osman Rafiu, aka Stopper, 32, a businessman.

They have been charged with conspiracy to commit crime namely murder and murder.

The court did not take their pleas and are expected to reappear on June 30, 2026.

Earlier, counsel for the accused persons prayed the court to discharge them because they had been on remand for more than two weeks with the charges preferred against them being defective.

The Prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apeweh Achana, counter defence counsel, said the charges were appropriate because the accused persons had allegedly confessed to their involvement in series of robberies in Kumasi and Accra, with investigations underway.

Prosecution indicated that based on painstaking investigation, the police managed to arrest them from various locations before bringing them to Accra.

The court overruled defence counsels’ argument and the charges and facts were read out to the accused persons.

The facts of the case are that police personnel stationed at the Police Headquarters are the complainants.

On June 14, 2023, Lance Corporal Calistus Amoah (deceased), who was on escort duties on board a bullion van with registration number GT 1254-10, was shot and killed in broad daylight by some armed men at the Star Oil Filling Station.

Prosecution said the gang of armed men made away with an AK 47 Assault Rifle.

The incident, captured on CCTV,  which  later went viral, showed a white pick-up with registration number GT 1254-10, making its way out of the Ablekuma Star Oil Filling Station but reversed and stopped.

“Two suspecting men on board a motorbike armed with AK47 Assault Rifle advanced towards the passenger seat at the front of the Bullion Van and shot at Lance Corporal Amoah, killing him instantly,” prosecution said.

Two other men arrived at the scene on board another motor bike, also armed with AK47 Assault Rifle, and fired sporadically.

Police gathered Intelligence that the kingpins behind the robbery were within Accra, Kumasi, and Ashiaman and they were still carrying out other robberies within the country.

On June 4, 2026, intelligence gathered indicated that the said syndicate had been sighted around Kumasi and a team proceeded to Suame where the four accused persons were arrested.

During investigations, it came to light that a man, known as Abodie, currently at large, sent photographs of AK 47 Assault Rifles to Rafiu, the fourth accused person to look for prospective buyers.

Prosecution told the court that the accused persons had informed the Police of their involvement in series of robberies in Kumasi and Accra.

Investigations are underway to apprehend the other accomplices.
