Fiapre (Bono), Aug. 26, GNA – Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, the Nigerian President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), has called for Public Private Partnership (PPP) in Ghana’s road infrastructure development.
He said the private sector involvement in road infrastructure development in Ghana would enhance the nation’s sustainable transport system.
Dr Oyeyemi made the call at the opening session of the 2026 Logistics and Transport Conference and Annual General Meeting of the CILT, underway at Fiapre, near Sunyani.
The three-day conference is on the theme: “Transforming Ghana’s transport infrastructure for inclusive and sustainable growth.”
Participants will deliberate and proffer realistic interventions towards improving the nation’s public transport system.
Discussions will center on urban transportation and traffic congestion management, PPP in transport development, inclusive transport system for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) and vulnerable groups.
They will also deliberate extensively on the implementation of the new vehicle registration number plates system, energy conservation and electric vehicles.
Stakeholders in the aviation and transport sectors as well as personnel from the Driver and Vehicles Licensing Authority (DVLA), National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), as well as the energy and logistics sectors are attending the conference.
Dr Oyeyemi highlighted the benefit of involving the private sector in advancing road infrastructure development, saying that the private sector contributions remained enormous in the development of highways and inland transport and railways and marine sectors.
“Incorporating the private sector in long term national development plans and projects is a game changer approach working effectively in Nigeria,” he stated, saying that had reduced the burden on the Nigerian government in pushing infrastructure development.
Dr Oyeyemi urged Ghana to encourage private sector investments buses too, saying that the implementation of PPP helped address shoddy works in government.
He said the PPP facilitated accelerated growth, justifying that: “The private investor has enough time to monitor quality work and project completion”, suggesting that the government could partner with the private sector for concrete roads.
In an interview with the media, Mr Abraham Amaliba, the Director General of the NRSA, called for investments into vehicle towing businesses, saying that from 2027, the NRSA would implement a mandatory vehicle towing system in the country.
He said that: “All towing companies are also mandated to register with the NRSA to recognise and regulate their activities.”
Mr Amaliba explained that the Authority would soon carry out a nationwide public sensitization exercise on the vehicle towing system.
