Concerned Citizens of South Tongu to Hold Demonstration Over Acute Water Crisis

By Evans Worlanyo Ameamu

Sogakope (V/R), June 3, GNA – The Concerned Citizens of South Tongu District in the Volta Region have formally notified the public of their intention to stage a peaceful demonstration on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, to protest the persistent shortage of potable water affecting communities in the area.

They noted that a notice dated May 26 was submitted to the District Police Commander, invoking Section 1 of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491), to officially declare their plans for the demonstration, which is expected to attract over 1,000 participants.

According to the organisers, the action has become necessary due to the severe water crisis affecting households, schools, businesses, and public health across the district.

Mr Mawuli Sappor, Convenor of the group, said the demonstration is scheduled to commence at 0700 hours and end at 1200 hours.

He explained that participants will gather at the Top Oil Filling Station (UniPetrol) and march peacefully through the N1 highway to the Star Oil Filling Station, then proceed via John Miller Road to the Ghana Water Company Limited premises, before moving to the South Tongu District Assembly to present a petition to the District Chief Executive.

He noted that he, together with Organiser Mr Gator Daniel and Secretary Mr Johnson Cobby Amedzo, signed the notice on behalf of the group, assuring the police of their commitment to peace, order, and full cooperation with security personnel.

Mr Sappor said the water crisis in South Tongu has been described as acute, with many communities experiencing prolonged shortages of clean drinking water. He added that some residents say the situation has created severe hardship, particularly for schoolchildren and vulnerable households, raising serious public health concerns.

He stressed that the demonstration will be conducted in full compliance with the law, expressing hope that it will draw the attention of relevant authorities to urgently address the district’s water infrastructure challenges. He also appealed for adequate police security and guidance during the exercise.

According to him, copies of the notice were also sent to the Divisional Commander of the Tongu Division, the District Chief Executive, the Member of Parliament, and other relevant authorities, reflecting the group’s desire for broad stakeholder engagement.

He said South Tongu District has in recent times faced recurring complaints about water supply, with residents often relying on unsafe alternative sources during prolonged shortages. He added that the planned demonstration reflects growing public frustration over what they describe as official inaction.

The group assured that it remains committed to constructive dialogue and hopes that presenting its petition directly to the District Chief Executive will lead to positive outcomes, including immediate intervention by the Ghana Water Company Limited to restore reliable water supply.

The Ghana News Agency further gathered that as the June 17 date approaches, security agencies and residents are expected to remain vigilant to ensure the demonstration proceeds peacefully as planned.
