Anloga (V/R), June 30, GNA- The Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) of Anloga, Keta and Ketu South have held a tripartite meeting to deliberate on the management and control of the ongoing flood situation in their respective districts.

The meeting brought together the leadership of the three coastal districts, all of which share the Keta Lagoon basin and are similarly vulnerable to the seasonal flooding.

The meeting was to find a coordinated and lasting solution to the floolding menace.

Madam Sedra Seyram Kpedor, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Anloga in the Volta Region, has disclosed that disclosed that the Assemblies are carefully considering technical and expert advice regarding the possible opening of the floodgates at Havedzi, a critical step that requires careful assessment to avoid worsening the situation for downstream and upstream communities alike.

“The technocrats including Mr Rex Adekor, a renowned and retired engineer, and Mr Joel Degue, among others, have been engaged to provide the requisite technical guidance needed to inform the decision-making process,” she said.

She explained that the team of experts and district officials visited the floodgate at Havedzi to physically assess the water levels and determine the appropriate conditions necessary for the gate to be opened.

Madam Kpedor assured the residents of the three districts that only the best decisions would be taken purely in the interest of the people and the affected communities and would be implemented regarding the management of the floodwaters.

She said: “I urge the public to exercise patience as the technical assessments continue; the safety of lives and property remain our top-most priority; every decision will be considered in the interest of the good people of the districts.”

The DCE further called on residents in flood-prone areas to continue taking care of themselves and to remain vigilant during this period, as the rainy season continues to pose risks to communities along the coast and lagoon basin.

She commended the spirit of collaboration among the three coastal districts, noting that the tripartite approach reflects a shared recognition that flooding in one district often has direct consequences for its neighbours, which made the joint planning essential.

Madam Kpedor assured the public that the District Assemblies would continue to provide regular updates as further technical assessments are concluded and decisions are made regarding the floodgates and broader flood management efforts in the affected communities.

Mr Wisdom Seader and Mr Nicholas Kwabla Woclachie, the MCEs for Keta and Ketu South Municipalities respectively, who attended the meeting, assured the public of all the necessary measures to address the flooding situations in the area before it would escalate.

They indicated that consultation and proper engagements are still underway for the appropriate technical solutions to the flooding situation that has caused unrest in many parts of the area.

The GNA further gathered that more than 28,000 people within the Anloga District have been affected by the devastating flood while most places structures including houses, pubs, hotels, restaurants, events grounds among others in Keta and Ketu South Municipalities were severely affected.
