Accra, May 24, GNA – Ghana’s Black Starlets fell short of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup after losing 8-7 on penalties to Uganda in their play-off match at the U17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Black Starlets started the game on a bright note and took the lead through Eric Adu Gyamfi, who found the back of the net in the ninth minute.

The team maintained control for long periods and looked confident going forward, but Uganda’s Owen Mukisa equalised before halftime from a corner kick.

The Black Starlets regained the lead in the second half when Abdul Latif Wunzalgu found the net, putting Ghana on course for qualification to the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

However, Uganda led by former Ghanaian international Laryea Kingston, drew level again after being awarded a penalty with about five minutes remaining.

Ibanda Arafat stepped up and converted from the spot to level the game at 2-2 and force the match into a penalty shootout.

Both sides converted most of their spot kicks in a tense shootout before Uganda emerged winners with an 8-7 victory to secure qualification.

The defeat means the Black Starlets would miss out on the 2026 FIFA U17 World Cup.
