Police arrest six suspects for alleged murder at galamsey site

Takoradi, May 27, GNA – The Western Regional Police Command has arrested six suspects in connection with a shooting incident that led to the death of one person at an illegal mining (galamsey) site at Gwira Ampansie in the Nzema East Municipality. 

Three of the suspects were three Ghanaians- Hamza Abubakar, 36, Hamidu Seidu, 42, and Francis Biewose, 26- and three Chinese nationals, namely Bai Yaozheng, 36, Liu Gang, 43, and Wen Xien Wen, 45. 

A statement signed by Superintendent of Police Olivia Adiku, Head of Public Affairs Unit, Western Regional Police Command, said the deceased, Angu Mensah, 45, the Abusuapanyin of Gwira Ampansie, was shot at the site during a misunderstanding. 

The statement said on Sunday, May 24, 26, at about 1320 hours, the Police in Axim received a distress call of a shooting incident at a mining site. 

It said the team together with the Regional Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) proceeded to the scene, where on the spot investigation revealed that at about 1145 hours, a misunderstanding ensued between the deceased and some people at the site, and in the process one Alfred Sadick, alias Strongman, shot him in the chest. 

The statement noted that the six suspects were currently in Police custody assisting investigation. 

It said efforts were underway to get suspect Alfred Sadick arrested. 

The Police appealed to anyone with credible information on his whereabouts to contact the Regional Police Command or Axim Police for his arrest. 

Meanwhile, the body of the deceased had been deposited at the Axim Government Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy, the statement added.
