Accra, May 29, GNA – Mr Omar Faruk Osman, the President, Federation of African Journalists (FAJ), has urged media houses to invest in digital security to safeguard the ethical standards of journalism in the wake of technological advancements.
As media houses intended to transition into the digital space, they needed to build systems to protect the standards, he said.
Mr Osman made these suggestions at the Corporate Governance Series webinar organised by the Corporate Secretarial and Training Services Limited, and its media partners, including the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) and the Ghana Journalists Association.
The meeting was on the theme: “Steering the Narrative: Effective Corporate Governance for Media Excellence.”
Mr Osman called on media organisations to adopt inclusive and good governance practices to ensure they were well positioned to play an effective role in nation building.
“Media houses and practitioners need to come together to ensure internal accountability and build a strong, inclusive governance system,” he added.
Professor Amin Alhassan, the Director-General of GBC, called for an effective media board composition that comprised a legal practitioner, finance person, and an experienced media practitioner.
He said the issue of media funding needed to be addressed since it had the potential of undermining media independence and freedom.
Prof. Alhassan urged the National Media Commission to ensure media owners instituted proper salary structures and pensions for journalists prior to renewing their operational licenses.
He said many journalists, especially those in the private media space, had no befitting salary nor retirement benefits.
He urged labour unions in the media space to push for improved wages and working conditions for journalists in the country.
