Laboratory scientists critical for clinical decision-making – GAMLS President

Sumbrungu (U/E), May 25, GNA – Dr Eric Kofi Aidoo, the President of the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS), has stated that the Association forms the absolute foundation of clinical decision-making.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the maiden Congress of the Federation of Ghana Medical Laboratory Students’ Associations (FG-MELSA) at the Bolgatanga Technical University, Dr Aidoo warned that a health system without strong diagnostic capacity was “flying blind”.

The congress was held under the theme: “Securing the Future: Visionary Leadership, Strategic Opportunity, and Professional Excellence.”

Dr Aidoo unveiled a bold blueprint for the future of diagnostics in Ghana and challenged the next generation of scientists to step out of the shadows of the laboratory and take their rightful place at the decision-making table.

“We are the foundation, not a support service,” the GAMLS President said, adding, that “Ghana’s health system needs visionary laboratory scientists at every level.

“We need scientists who can walk into a Ministry of Health meeting and articulate why diagnostics is not just a support service, but the foundation of clinical decision-making.”

He urged scientists to use data to aggressively prove to hospital boards that investing in modern laboratories was directly tied to patient safety and institutional credibility.

Dr Aidoo noted that the global medical landscape had fundamentally shifted, presenting unprecedented strategic opportunities for today’s scientists.

He highlighted that while decades of advocacy struggled to move the needle, the COVID-19 pandemic forced governments, international donors, and health agencies to realize that strong diagnostic capacity was non-negotiable.

With major international frameworks like the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the Africa CDC aggressively funding laboratory-strengthening systems, the GAMLS President made it clear that the window of opportunity is wide open.

“There is money moving. There are policies being written. There are systems being designed. The question is: who will be at the table when those decisions are made?” he asked.

To capture this momentum, Dr Aidoo highlighted the recently launched GAMLS 2026–2031 Strategic Plan, unveiled in April, which envisions an overhauled Ghanaian healthcare system where every single health facility houses a functional, quality-assured laboratory.

He said the plan further envisions facilities that were fully staffed by highly competent, recognized professionals whose dignity, rights, and professional independence were fiercely protected.

While Dr Aidoo promised that GAMLS would remain a “fierce and principled advocate” for the rights of its members, he did not mince words in demanding absolute professional excellence from the attendees.

He reminded the students that a single misdiagnosis in the real world was not just a failed exam but a “human tragedy,” emphasising that the standards of the profession must remain flawless.

Mr Emmanuel Antwi Boasiako Frimpong, the Upper East Regional Chairman of GAMLS, also urged members of the FG-MELSA to develop themselves holistically, and not just academically, to prepare for the future.

“The future is unpredictable, so you need to prepare holistically to face it; emotionally, physically, academically, and spiritually,” he advised the students.

Mr Benedict Ayitey, the President of the FG-MELSA, entreated his fellow students to strategically position themselves to take advantage of emerging opportunities within the healthcare system.

“We must embrace innovation, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, molecular diagnostics, research development, and interdisciplinary collaboration. We must grab hold of leadership opportunities at every given avenue. This will build strong and competitive leaders right from the student leadership level,” he said.
