Accra, May 15, GNA – Ghana secured bronze medals in both the men’s and women’s 4×100 metres relays at the 24th African Senior Athletics Championships being held at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.

The host nation’s men’s team, competing as defending champions, finished third in a time of 38.74 seconds behind winners Cote d’Ivoire who set a new national record of 38.52 seconds.
Nigeria placed second with a time 38.70 seconds.

Ghana’s quartet of Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, Edwin Gadayi, Joseph Paul Amoah and Ibrahim Fuseini delivered a solid performance despite the absence of Benjamin Azamati, who missed the competition due to injury.

Saminu, who anchored the men’s team, said they had hoped to defend the title they won in Douala but acknowledged the strength of their rivals, particularly Cote d’Ivoire.

He was hopeful they would be able to improve their times in subsequent competitions before next year’s World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

In the women’s event, Nigeria won gold in a time of 42.94 seconds while Liberia finished second with 43.05 seconds. Ghana placed third in 44.85 seconds.

Janet Kwarteng produced a strong anchor leg to secure the bronze for the hosts.

The results drew cheers from home fans, as both relay teams delivered podium finishes in front of the Accra crowd.

The double podium finish takes Ghana’s medal haul to five at the championships, which are scheduled to conclude on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
