Ghana Water Ltd announces controlled spillage of excess water from Weija dam

Accra, May 28, GNA – Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the controlled spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam following a rise in the dam’s water level above the maximum operating threshold of 48 feet.

The company said all spill gates of the dam had been opened to allow for the safe discharge of excess water to protect the structural integrity and safety of the dam infrastructure.

A statement, signed by Mr Stanley Martey, Chief Manager in charge of Public Relations and Communications at GWL and copied to the Ghana News Agency on Thursday, said the exercise formed part of annual safety measures undertaken during the rainy season whenever water levels exceeded 45 feet.

“The public may recall that every year during the rainy season, and anytime the water level exceeds 45 feet, Ghana Water Ltd undertakes controlled spilling operations to prevent undue pressure on the dam and avert any potential disaster,” the statement said.

According to GWL, the Ghana Meteorological Agency had forecast further torrential rains upstream, a situation expected to increase inflows into the dam area in the coming days and weeks.

The company explained that the spilling exercise would continue until water levels receded to an appreciable and safe operating level, noting that the process could last for months depending on rainfall patterns and inflow volumes.

GWL, therefore, urged residents living along the downstream course of the river to immediately evacuate from vulnerable areas to avoid possible loss of lives and destruction of property.

The release said the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and various District Assemblies had commenced plans to remove structures and other obstructions hindering the free flow of water into the sea.

It appealed to the relevant authorities to expedite those interventions to minimise the risk of flooding and protect affected communities.

The Weija Dam, located on the Densu River, serves as one of the major sources of potable water supply to parts of Accra and surrounding communities.

Over the years, controlled spillages from the dam during periods of heavy rains have led to flooding in some downstream communities, including parts of Weija, Tetegu, Oblogo and other low-lying areas along the river basin.

GWL assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding the dam while ensuring public safety and urged residents to cooperate with all emergency directives issued by state institutions.

The company urged the public to remain calm and adhere strictly to safety advisories as authorities monitored the situation closely.
