Sunyani, (Bono), May 12, GNA – Abubakari Yakubu, the Sunyani East Communication Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urged the party to leverage new media opportunities to effectively market its philosophies and ideologies in the digital space.

Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani while declaring his intention to contest for the Bono Regional Communication Officer position of the NPP, Mr Yakubu stated that social media influence could make the party more attractive and help attract more followers and supporters.

“It’s my utmost desire and hope to ensure that at least 90 percent of the party executives are actively engaged on social media platforms to effectively market our ideologies and philosophies upon which our party was founded,” he stated.

Popularly known as “Baba Amando,” Mr Yakubu gained national attention after he was arrested by the Cyber Security Unit of the Ghana Police Service for alleged cyber-related offences in April this year.

His arrest triggered the “Yensuro Ahununu Demo” staged by supporters of the opposition NPP on the streets of Sunyani, the Bono Regional capital, to protest what they described as a “government-sponsored attack on free speech and democracy.”

Mr Yakubu described the administration of John Dramani Mahama as “confusing,” arguing that only an NPP government could improve socio-economic conditions and better the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for, upholding, and defending free speech, which he described as a strong pillar upon which the NPP was founded. He also expressed optimism that party delegates would endorse his bid.

According to Mr Yakubu, the NPP in the Bono Region requires a collaborative approach if the party is to make a significant impact in Election 2026 and secure more parliamentary seats.

“Let’s work assiduously to transform the regional communications directorate by integrating contemporary concepts rooted in transparency, unwavering commitment, a digital-driven approach, and effective resource mobilization to ensure innovative outcomes,” he stated.

Mr Yakubu emphasized that leveraging mainstream media and information centres across the region for information dissemination remained essential in making the NPP more appealing and attracting more supporters ahead of Election 2028.

He also pledged to organize regular workshops for party communicators to sharpen their communication skills and promised that hardworking communicators would be recognised and rewarded if elected as the Regional Communication Officer of the NPP.

Academic Background

Mr Yakubu disclosed that he holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture Education from University of Education, Winneba-Mampong (UEW-M). He also possesses a Crop Pest Diagnosis Foundation Certificate from Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI), UK.

Additionally, he holds certificates in Gender-Inclusive Strategies for Improving Agricultural Productivity and other professional certifications from CABI, UK.

Political Career

In his political career, Mr Yakubu said he served as President of the Tertiary Education Students Confederacy (TESCON) of the NPP at the UEW-Mampong campus.

He has also served as a  member of the Bono Regional Communications Team, electoral Area coordinator at Yawhima, and  olling Station Secretary at Yawhima in the Sunyani East Constituency.

Committee Memberships

Mr Yakubu stated that he served as a member of the Sunyani East Constituency Campaign Teams from Election 2012 through Election 2024.

He further noted that he was part of the campaign team of former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia from 2023 to 2026.
