US military says Iran blockade effective, no ships get through

Washington, April 15, (dpa/GNA) – The US military said on Wednesday, it was successfully enforcing a naval blockade against Iran, preventing shipping traffic to and from the country.

During the first 48 hours of the blockade on vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports, no ships “made it past US forces,” the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on X.

Nine vessels also complied with orders from US forces to turn back and return to Iranian ports or coastal waters, it added.

In a separate post, CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said US forces had maintained naval dominance in the Middle East and had effectively brought maritime trade to and from Iran to a halt.

About 90% of Iran’s economy depends on seaborne trade, he said.
