Suspect in custody after shots fired at White House Correspondents’ Dinner

April 26 (CNN/GNA) – President Donald Trump was rushed off stage unhurt at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, DC, after shots were fired on Saturday night.

An attacker “armed with a shotgun, a handgun and multiple knives” charged through a security checkpoint, police said.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from California, three sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

He will be charged with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, US Attorney Jeanine Pirro said.

FBI agents have assembled overnight outside a home linked to Allen in Torrance, a Los Angeles suburb. Police tape was put up along part of the street and a spotlight was shone on the property.

A US Secret Service officer, who was shot in their protective gear has since been released from the hospital, according to USSS Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi.

Incident happened at same hotel where Ronald Reagan was shot over 40 years ago

The security incident that saw President Donald Trump rushed from the stage happened at the same hotel where more than 40 years ago, another sitting president almost lost his life.

Ronald Reagan was shot by John Hinckley Jr. in an attempted assassination while leaving the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981.

He was seriously injured by a gunshot wound that punctured a lung and caused serious internal bleeding.
