NCCE sheds light on abuse of office, power with student leaders of TTU

Effia (WR), April 30, GNA – Student leaders from the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) have been educated on the abuse of power and office for the wrong purposes.

They were alerted that such acts also perpetuated corruption and contributed to the continuous decline of social good and realistic development.

Madam Efua Yankson, the Acting Regional Director of the CHRAJ, a resource person for the programme  organised by the National Commission for Civic Education(NCCE), explained to the students that abuse of office was when a public officer improperly exercised the powers, resources or influence of their office for private gain.

That could favour an undeserved person, victimise others or for any personal aggrandisement rather than the lawful functions of that office.

She said such behaviours also conflicted with the statutory mandate of such public officers and leaders as stated in article 284 of the 1992 constitution.

Madam Yankson noted that breaching public trust in the office one served was illegal and punishable by the laws of the country and called on the leaders to be aware and propagate the same among themselves and families to revert to that creeping menace.

She also encouraged the students’ leaders not to condone evil, but to report through the whistleblower acts so that offenders could face the full rigour of justice.

Mr  Andrews Ofori Larbi, the Western Regional Director of the NCCE, added that corruption was not only about the big embezzlement, wrongful award of contract, nepotism, favouritism but also the abuse of office time, picking petty items from the office to your homes without any authorization and noted the need for all and sundry to turn a new leaf towards the development of the state.

He noted that ethical leadership, transparency, and accountability remained essential to strengthen democratic governance and sustaining public trust.

Mr  Larbi said the NCCE under the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy Programme the Commission continued to educate and create awareness in the public space to drive accountability from duty bearers to improve upon the well-being of state.

He said the youth, students’ leaders and civic education clubs in schools have been targeted as future leaders to reinforce respect for the rule of law, ethical leadership, and advance public accountability standards.

Mr Larbi was thankful to the German government, European Union, Swiss government for helping the Country raise its bars on governance, democracy, and accountability.
