Warsaw, April 24, (dpa/GNA) – Israel has called on the Polish government, to take action against a far-right lawmaker who unfurled an Israeli flag, bearing a swastika in the Polish parliament, prompting a sharp response from Warsaw.
“Polish MP Konrad Berkowicz’s dubious record includes public support of Nazism. History has shown where racism and antisemitism lead, as Poland knows all too well,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on X.
“Such a person has no place in the parliament of democratic Poland. We expect the Polish authorities to act decisively and swiftly,” said the X post on Tuesday.
A spokesman for Poland’s Foreign Ministry responded on X on Wednesday: “It is Poles who elect their MPs, not foreign embassies.”
He said Poland’s parliamentary speaker had already imposed a fine on Berkowicz and reduced the lawmaker’s parliamentary allowance. The public prosecutor’s office is also investigating, according to the spokesman.
Last week, Berkowicz, held up a homemade Israeli flag, featuring a blue swastika in the place of the Star of David in parliament.
He accused Israel of committing a genocide in the Middle East, and compared the country to Nazi Germany, saying: “Israel is the new Third Reich, and its flag should look exactly like this.”
