Accra, March 10, GNA – The United Nations has condemned the Israeli. missile attack that injured Ghanaian peacekeepers serving in southern Lebanon.

In a statement issued on behalf of AntĂłnio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, said the incident on March 6 resulted in three Ghanaian peacekeepers of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) being injured inside their position in Al Qawzah in southwestern Lebanon during heavy firing.

Incidentally, March 6 is Ghana’s independence day.

The Secretary-General condemned the incident and wished the injured personnel a swift and full recovery, stressing that, the safety and security of UN personnel and property
must be respected at all times.

“The inviolatability of United Nations installations must be respected by all, and those responsible must be held accountable,” the statement emphasised.

The UN further urged the parties involved in the conflict to de-escalate immediately and comply with the provisions of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006 to end the war between Israel and Hezbollah and to maintain the cessation of hostilities along the Israel–Lebanon border.

The attack occurred amid heightened military tensions in the region after Israel and the United States attacked Iran, drawing in Iranian response and pro Iranian armed groups in southern Lebanon including Hezbollah.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) confirmed the injury of four Ghanaian soldiers serving under UNIFIL at the headquarters of the Ghanaian battalion in southern Lebanon who came under the missile attack.

A statement issued by the Department of Public Relations of the GAF at General Headquarters, Burma Camp, and signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, said three of the soldiers sustained minor injuries while one was critically wounded.

The critically injured soldier has since undergone surgery and is responding to treatment
All injured personnel are responding treatment and are in a stable condition.

The GAF also indicated that the accommodation facility of fourteen officers was completely destroyed during the attack. However, the affected personnel have since been re-kitted and re-accommodated, with the necessary logistical and welfare support provided.

Despite the incident, the Ghana Armed Forces said the battalion remained in high spirits and continued to carry out its peacekeeping mandate under the UN mission.

The attack underscores the risks faced by Ghanaian troops deployed on international peace support operations, particularly in volatile regions where cross-border exchanges between Israeli forces and armed groups in Lebanon have intensified in recent months.

The UNIFIL mission, established in 1978, continues to play a key role in monitoring the cessation of hostilities and supporting stability along the Israel–Lebanon border, with Ghana remaining one of the longstanding troop-contributing countries to the mission.
