(Special for CAFS) Army foils attack by armed militias in SW Somalia

MOGADISHU, March 30 (Xinhua/GNA) — The Somali National Army (SNA) has intensified operations in the southwest and surrounding regions, successfully repelling attacks by al-Shabaab and armed local militias on the outskirts of Baidoa, authorities said on Monday.

The Ministry of Defence said, SNA forces conducting operations against al-Shabaab on the outskirts of Baidoa were attacked early in the morning by armed militias.

“The forces, who were on high alert, responded swiftly to the attack. They successfully repelled and defeated the militias that carried out the unjustified assault, capturing some of the attackers,” the ministry said in a statement.

“Military officials have warmly received those who surrendered, and medical assistance has been provided to some of the injured militias, who are currently being treated at military medical facilities,” it added.

According to the defence ministry, SNA forces remain in control of most of the areas from which the militias launched their attack, and continue efforts to secure the region.

The move comes after the United Nations, African Union, and Intergovernmental Authority on Development separately called for de-escalation of tensions following recent clashes in the South West State of Somalia that have displaced about 45,000 people.
