President to initiate full investigation into the circumstances of Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu’s death – Association

Accra, March 14, GNA – The Mamprugu Youth Association – Accra Chapter has called on President John Dramani Mahama and other relevant authorities to initiate full, transparent and public disclosure of the circumstances surrounding the death of Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu.

They demanded that the disclosure should include date, time, location, officers involved, chain of command, and any purported justification.

Abdul Aziz Iddrisu known as Baaluuse was arrested alongside his two siblings on February 17, 2026, in a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, and later the siblings were granted bail, the Association stated.

The call was made in a statement read by Mr Yakubu Nambe, the spokesperson of the Association at a press conference held in Accra on Friday, March 13, 2026.

The Association said the Ghana Police Service issued a widely publicised statement hailing the arrest as a breakthrough in the investigation into the fatal attack on police officers at the Karimenga barrier on 29 December 2025, where General Constable Seth Oppong Damoah was killed and two others injured.

They said Aziz was explicitly described as being “in police custody assisting with investigations.”

The Association said Aziz’s family lawyer, Martin kpebu then summited a formal letter to the Inspector-General of Police demanding access to his client but no response was received from the IGP or the Director-General CID.

“After a reminder, the IGP convened a meeting with Aziz’s lawyer. In that meeting, the IGP disclosed – verbally and without documentation – that Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu had been shot dead by the police. Shameful,” they stated.

The Association added, “More than a week later, the IGP has failed to deliver on his promise to provide a formal written response. No official statement has been issued to the family, lawyer or the public. No autopsy report has been released. No inquest has been announced. The body has not been handed over for burial.”

They asked, “Who authorised the unlawful execution of an unarmed suspect in custody? Under whose command? Why has the state refused to produce the body, the autopsy results, or any forensic evidence.

“How many more names are on this ‘hit list’ of Mamprusi youth circulating in security circles? Who is next to be targeted under this ethnic cleansing agenda?

The Association stated that the murder of Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu represents multiple layers of constitutional and international human rights breaches such as, violation of the right to life and prohibition of arbitrary deprivation.

The others were enforced disappearance followed by extrajudicial execution, ethnic discrimination in the application of law enforcement, denial of access to counsel and family during detention, and failure to conduct prompt, independent, and transparent investigation into a death in custody.

“We call on all Ghanaians – particularly the media (mainstream and alternative), civil society organisations, religious bodies, traditional authorities, the diplomatic community, and international human right bodies to stand up for justice and equality. Raise your voices. Demand accountability. Prevent the next tragedy.”

The Association said, “Justice for Abdul-Aziz Iddrisu! Justice for every victim of state abuse! Justice for every Ghanaian, irrespective of tribe! Never again!”
