Accra, March 23, GNA – The Northern Regional Police Command has commenced investigations into a reported assault on visual artist, Mr Ibrahim Mahama, by some unknown security officers in Tamale.
A release issued by Chief Inspector Luckman Niedow Alhassan, Northern Regional Public Affairs Officer, on Monday refuted claims in sections of the media that the Special Operations Team (The Black Maria) was involved in the case.
It said the team was withdrawn from the Northern Region by the Inspector-General of Police on Thursday, March 5, 2026, weeks before the incident.
“The cause of the assault is not known but the international artist and founder of the Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA), the “Red Clay Studio” and Nkrumah Voli-ni, all in Tamale, told a section of the media that armed officers broke into his vehicle in Tamale,” the release said.
“Mr Mahama said he was forced to unlock his phone, after which images were allegedly deleted.”
It assured the public that updates of the ongoing investigation would be duly communicated.
