Accra, March 05, GNA – Leaders of the One Volta Group (OVG), an advocacy and development-focused organisation, have engaged Togbe Afede XIV, the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, on a proposed Integrated Transshipment Deep Sea Port project in Keta.
The meeting, led by Mr. Kossi Nutekpor, Chairman of One Volta Group-USA, discussed the group’s strategic business and development blueprint aimed at establishing a modern deep sea transshipment port in the coastal town.
A statement issued in Accra by the group said the proposed project forms part of a broader vision to transform the Volta Region into a major economic and logistics hub within the sub-region.
Mr. Nutekpor said the first two options in the project proposal were existing government proposals currently under consideration.
He explained that the third option, being championed by the One Volta Group, was the proposed Integrated Transshipment Deep Sea Port in Keta.
He said the group was studying a similar transshipment seaport model developed by China in Chancay, Peru.
Mr. Nutekpor explained that a deep sea transshipment port served as a central hub where cargo from large ocean-going vessels was transferred to smaller ships for onward distribution to other ports within the region.
He said such ports were typically located along major international shipping routes and designed to handle large container volumes efficiently.
He noted that if realised, the Keta Integrated Transshipment Deep Sea Port could position Ghana as a key maritime gateway in West Africa.
According to him, the project could reduce congestion at existing ports and attract international shipping lines seeking alternative hubs within the Gulf of Guinea.
He said the project would also create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in shipping, logistics, construction, warehousing, and allied industries.
The initiative, he added, could stimulate industrial growth, including export processing zones and manufacturing clusters, while boosting trade between landlocked neighbouring countries and global markets.
Mr. Nutekpor said the project could also enhance infrastructure development in the Volta Region, including roads, rail links, energy supply, and digital connectivity.
Togbe Afede expressed confidence in the potential of the project but stressed the need for thorough feasibility studies to ensure its viability and attractiveness to investors.
He encouraged the group to engage maritime experts and undertake detailed technical, financial, and environmental assessments to strengthen investor confidence.
Other members of the Group including Togbe H. Amedzake III, OVG Executive Director-Ghana, Mr. Seth K.T. Owusu, OVG Tech Team Representative and Mr Frank Bobuafor -OVG Technical Team Member.
