Accra, March 18, GNA—The New Patriotic Party Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate repeal of the GH¢1 Dumsor Levy.
Mr. Collins Adomko-Mensah, the Deputy Ranking Member on the Energy Committee of Parliament, argued that the justification for the levy had evaporated since the energy sector debt had been addressed, and the World Bank guarantee restored.
He said, “We emphatically call upon the government to immediately table a repeal bill under a certificate of urgency to comprehensively abolish the Energy Sector Levies (Amendment) Act, 2025,” Mr. Adomako-Mensah said at a press conference in Parliament House on Wednesday.
The levy, introduced in June 2025, was meant to address energy sector debts and mitigate power supply issues.
However, Mr. Adomako-Mensah explained that with the current global oil price surge and the cedi no longer allegedly absorbing the levy impact, it was unfair to continue charging consumers.
“The government had assured that the levy wouldn’t lead to extra costs for petrol or diesel, but with prices projected to rise significantly, we, the minority, are questioning the policy,” he stated.
According to Mr. Adomako-Mensah, also the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Afigya Kwabre North, said the government’s payment of $1.47 billion to reset the energy sector and the restoration of the World Bank guarantee had further fueled calls for repeal.
