Accra, March 6, GNA – President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated the 52 outstanding students who received the 2026 President’s Independence Day Award.

The President’s Independence Awards is an annual event organised by the Presidency on the eve of Ghana’s Independence Day Anniversary to recognise exceptional academic performance in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) of the previous academic year.

This year’s ceremony was held on Wednesday, March 4, at the Accra International Conference Centre, where Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang presented the awards to the recipients.

Speaking at Ghana’s 69th Independence Day National Parade held at the Forecourt of the Presidency in Accra, President Mahama also commended Keta Secondary Technical School for winning the 69th Independence Day Quiz Competition.

He further congratulated the winners of this year’s National Debates Competition.

“All of you represent the promise of Ghana’s future,” he said.

President Mahama also announced that he had assented to the 24-Hour Economy Authority Bill, which has now become law.

He said the historic reform would boost Ghana’s productivity, as businesses would be incentivised to run across multiple shifts, factories would operate around the clock, and services would become more accessible to citizens.

The President said the initiative would generate about 1,000 new jobs across various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, security and transportation.

“This initiative will enable us to optimise the use of our national infrastructure and establish Ghana as a competitive industrial hub. And this is how we will create prosperity,” he said.
