Kumasi, March 16, GNA – The Local Governance Network (LoGNet), a civil society organisation, has called on the government to align Ghana’s long-term national development plans with the country’s constitutional review cycles.
The LoGNet said this would ensure policy continuity, accountability and sustainable development.
According to the network, synchronising long-term development strategies with constitutional review timelines would help reduce policy disruptions that often occurred when governments changed, while strengthening governance stability.
Mr. Christopher Dapaah, the National Coordinator of LoGNet, made the call during an interview with the media at a capacity-building workshop on constitutional review issues for civil society organisations (CSOs) and media practitioners in Kumasi.
The workshop was organised by the CDD-Ghana, a member organisation of LoGNet, with support from the STAR-Ghana Foundation.
Mr. Dapaah explained that, aligning long-term development plans with constitutional review cycles would ensure that Ghana’s national vision transcended political transitions and remained focused on inclusive and sustainable growth.
He said: “Aligning Ghana’s long-term development plans with constitutional review cycles is a strategic necessity.
It ensures that our national vision transcends political transitions and remains firmly anchored in inclusiveness and sustainability.”
He noted that the long-term development plan should span several decades, with clearly defined milestones tied to constitutional review periods, while remaining flexible enough to adapt to emerging national and global challenges.
Mr. Dapaah indicated that such a framework could serve as a national blueprint for development, helping to maintain a consistent policy direction regardless of changes in political leadership.
He said the approach would also strengthen accountability and transparency in implementing development priorities, while ensuring that women, youth and persons with disabilities, were actively included in the national development process.
The National Coordinator further emphasised that aligning development plans with constitutional review cycles would support Ghana’s commitments to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in areas such as poverty reduction, climate resilience and inclusive economic growth.
He also highlighted the importance of prioritising sectors such as agriculture, renewable energy and digital innovation to drive long-term prosperity.
According to him, synchronising national development planning with constitutional timelines, would provide a predictable framework for monitoring reforms, evaluating progress and ensuring that development priorities remain consistent beyond political transitions.
