Fifteen arrested in anti-drug operation in Tamale, Savelugu

Tamale, March 19, GNA – The Northern Regional Special Operations Team dubbed: “Red Maria” has arrested 15 persons for alleged possession of suspected narcotic drugs during a targeted anti-drug operation in the Tamale Metropolis and Savelugu. 

The operation, which was carried out between 2130 hours on March 17 and 0500 hours on March 18, formed part of ongoing efforts by the Police to clamp down on drug peddling and related criminal activities in the region. 

A press statement issued by the Public Relations Unit of the Northern Regional Police Command and sighted by the Ghana News Agency, said the team, comprising 35 personnel and led by Superintendent John Danso and Assistant Superintendent of Police Rashid Jeremiah, first conducted a swoop at Choggu, a suburb of Tamale, where nine suspects were apprehended. 

The suspects are Mohammed Awal, 31; Yakubu Abdul Jalil, 25; Adam Abdul Ganiu, 24; Abdulla Yakubu, 28; Alhassan Abdulla Razak, 21; Ibrahim Abdul Malik, 25; Issah Ibrahim, 15; Nashiru Mubarak, 20; and Alhassan Abdullai, 20. 

The team subsequently proceeded to Savelugu, where six additional suspects were arrested.  

They are Abdul Mustapha, 23; Alhassan Ibrahim, 31; Ziblim Alhassan, 30; Zakaria Abdul Hafiz, 40; Abubakari Bashiru, 30; and Adam Abdul, 23. 

All 15 suspects are currently in Police custody and are assisting with investigations. 

The Police said the operation formed part of sustained measures to rid communities of illicit drugs and ensure public safety, and assured members of the public of its continued commitment to combating drug-related offences across the region.
