Accra, March 8, GNA – The Association of Women in the Media (ASWIM) has urged stakeholders to invest in women through mentorship, resources, and opportunities to accelerate national development.
In a statement signed by Mrs. Mavis Kitcher, President of ASWIM, to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, she noted that this year’s campaign theme, “Give to Gain” highlighted the importance of supporting women as a strategic investment for the growth of society.
‘Give to Gain’ mindset emphasises that when we give generously whether through resources, visibility, or mentorship, the opportunities for women increase and when women thrive, our entire nation rises”.
ASWIM noted that women continued to play critical roles in national development, from trading in local markets to occupying leadership positions in sectors such as technology, law, and governance.
The statement also paid tribute to women working in the media, acknowledging their sacrifices in ensuring the public remained informed.
“Within our fraternity, ASWIM pays a special tribute to the women in media who daily sacrifice their comfort and safety to be the conscience of the nation,” the statement said.
Many women journalists navigated demanding newsroom environments while also managing unpaid care responsibilities yet remained committed to reporting the truth and strengthening democratic accountability.
The statement acknowledged the country’s progress in advancing gender equity, particularly the passage of the Affirmative Action (Gender Equity) Act, 2024, which it said was an important step toward inclusive leadership.
ASWIM, however, called for accelerated implementation of gender-sensitive policies, the elimination of the gender pay gap in the private sector and increased investment in girls’ education, particularly in science, technology, engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) as well as media leadership.
Whiles acknowledging that giving women the platform to leadGhana’s most strategic investment, ASWIM reaffirmed its commitment to advocating policies and initiatives to promote women’s leadership and participation in national development.
