Adaklu Sofa (V/R), March 08, GNA – The chiefs and people of Adaklu Sofa in the Adaklu district on Saturday organised a massive cleanup exercise in the community to mark the March edition of the National Sanitation Day.

They desilted gutters and drains, swept the streets and market places, cleared weeds around the community, and collected and burned plastics and other waste materials.

Mr Jerry Yao Ameko, Adaklu District Chief Executive who joined the people to mark the day praised them for coming out in their numbers to partake in exercise.

“Your turnout is overwhelming and I commend you for that,” he said.

He stated that the exercise which was initiated by President John Dramani Mahama was not only to make communities tidy but also help minimise the spread of diseases like malaria, typhoid, and diarrhoea.

Mr Ameko said he and officials of the Environmental Health Unit of the Assembly would be moving from community to community every first Saturday in a month to ensure compliance with the exercise in the district.

“Participation in the day in the district is not optional but obligatory,” he told the people.

Mr Ameko called on Assembly members, chiefs and queens, religious leaders, and Civil Society Organisations to be at the forefront in mobilising the people of the exercise.

The DCE entreated community leaders not shelve those who refused to participate in the exercise but report them to his outfit for action to be taken against them.

He told the people to help make the district one of the cleanest in the country to help boost its socio-economic development.

Mrs Stella Vidzro, Adaklu District Environmental Health Officer who also participated in the exercise urged the people to sustain the enthusiasm with which they worked.

She noted that the exercise would not only minimise the spread of diseases but also drive away rodents and reptiles away from the community.

President John Dramani Mahama re-introduced the National Sanitation Day in Accra on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
