Koforidua, Feb. 23, GNA – Ms Rita Afriyie, Acting Technical Coordinator at the Technical Support Unit of the Ghana AIDS Commission, has advised the public to use condoms to reduce the spread of sexually transmitted infections and other related diseases.
She said condoms remained one of the most effective and affordable tools for preventing HIV and other STIs (sexually transmitted Infections).
“Staying healthy and free from infections prevents the spread of diseases, reduces healthcare costs, and boosts the nation’s economic activities,” she said.
Ms Afriyie spoke to the Ghana News Agency in Koforidua on the sidelines of activities marking this year’s International Condom Day.
She said common STIs included gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, chlamydia, hepatitis B and genital herpes, noting that they were mainly spread through unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex.
She added that some infections could also be passed from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding.
She explained that International Condom Day, observed annually on February 13, aims to promote safer sex practices, raise awareness of HIV and other STIs, reduce stigma, and encourage the correct and consistent use of condoms, especially among sexually active people and young adults.
She said condoms were affordable and widely available, and urged the public to buy them from pharmacies, licensed chemical sellers, health facilities and other approved outlets to ensure safety and quality.
On testing, Ms Afriyie encouraged people to know their HIV status and to undergo regular STI screening, especially if sexually active or having multiple partners.
She said individuals could visit the nearest health facility for confidential counselling and testing.
“Early testing enables timely treatment, prevents complications, and significantly reduces the risk of transmission to others,” she said.
She also advised couples to test together before starting sexual relationships and to maintain open communication about their sexual health.
“Protecting yourself is protecting your partner and protecting the nation,” she added.
