Tehran, Feb 23, (dpa/GNA) – Protests at universities in Iran against what the protestors term the “authoritarian Islamic system of rule” in the country, continued for the third consecutive day on Monday.
At al-Zahra University in the capital Tehran, which admits only women, female students participated in the protests, Iranian activists posted on Telegram.
Demonstrations also took place at the renowned Sharif University of Technology, and Amirkabir University of Technology in Tehran.
Videos on social media showed female students chanting protest slogans against the political leadership. “Death to the Islamic Republic,” was heard in one video.
“Neither Gaza nor Lebanon, my life for Iran,” the crowd chanted in another recording published by the student newsletter Amirkabir, referring to the support of the Iranian leadership for militant groups in the region such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
On Saturday, the new semester began at numerous universities in Iran, with a delay of just over a month. The universities had initially suspended their operations following the mass protests in early January.
Authorities shut down global internet access in the country for over three weeks. Subsquently, some universities resumed teaching with online events.
Iran’s security apparatus brutally suppressed the recent mass protests in the country. According to the news agency of the US-based Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA), more than 7,000 people lost their lives, including over 200 members of state forces.
