NPP Minority Urges Government to Credit Bawumia for “Gold for Reserves” Initiative

By Godwill Arthur-Mensah, GNA

Accra, Feb. 27, GNA – Mr Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament, has called on government to acknowledge and show gratitude to former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia for initiating the “Gold for Reserves” programme.

“Give to Bawumia what belongs to Bawumia. Bawumia that you attacked was the brainchild behind the Gold Reserves,” Mr Afenyo-Markin stated while commenting on the President’s State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered to Parliament on Friday.

The government recently introduced a policy framework aimed at using gold to shore up Ghana’s external reserves to 15 months of import cover by 2028.

The Effutu Legislator criticised the administration for relying on slogans after one year in office, urging it instead to prioritise job creation for the youth amid rising electricity tariffs.

He further alleged a looming scandal within the security services recruitment process and pressed government to take decisive measures against illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey.”

Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution mandates the President to present a State of the Nation Address at the beginning of each session of Parliament and before its dissolution.
