Accra, Feb. 28, GNA – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has advised Ghanaian nationals to avoid non-essential travel to and from the Middle East following escalating hostilities in the region.
The hostilities have triggered airspace closures, flight disruptions and heightened security alerts.
The Ministry, in a statement, said it was closely monitoring with serious concern the deteriorating security situation arising from ongoing coordinated military strikes by the U.S. and Israel against targets within the Islamic Republic of Iran, as well as reported retaliatory actions by Iran against Israel and United States military assets in parts of the region.
It noted that the tensions had particularly affected countries, including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where security alerts had been heightened and air travel disrupted.
As a precautionary measure, the Ministry urged Ghanaian nationals resident in Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to remain indoors where possible, comply strictly with directives issued by local authorities and exercise heightened vigilance at all times.
Ghanaians in affected areas have also been advised to avoid large gatherings and sensitive locations, closely monitor official communications, keep travel documents readily accessible and maintain regular contact with the nearest Ghanaian diplomatic mission.
The Ministry announced that an emergency preparedness plan had been activated, with ongoing assessments regarding the possible evacuation of Ghanaian nationals where necessary.
It said the Government had, at the time of issuing the statement, initiated the evacuation of a number of staff of the Embassy of Ghana in Tehran, while retaining essential personnel to coordinate assistance to Ghanaians residing in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The Ministry assured that Ghana’s diplomatic missions in the region remained available to provide consular support to nationals in need.
Ghanaian nationals requiring emergency consular assistance have been provided with dedicated contact lines for various countries in the region.
