German police probe Facebook comments such as pinocchio concerning Merz

Stuttgart, feb 23, (dpa/GNA) – German police are probing several people over potentially insulting comments posted on Facebook, amid a visit by Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the south-western city of Heilbronn last year, a police spokesman said on Monday.

Police took to Facebook in October to announce a one-day flight ban related to Merz’s visit to Heilbronn, which is located to the north of Stuttgart.

The post raked up hundreds of comments, with many users taking aim at the chancellor amid the flight ban.

Some of the comments were “offensive in nature,” the spokesman said, naming terms used to refer to Merz such as “Pinocchio.”

For this reason, police have filtered out comments under the post that could potentially be relevant under criminal law, as they are obliged to do, he added. “If we have initial suspicion of a criminal offence, we must pursue it further.”
