Winners of National Chess Championship unveiled

Accra, Jan 20, GNA – Winners of the recently held National Chess Championship have been announced after series of brain racking rounds of chess which brought together top chess players from across the country, showcasing exceptional skill, strategy, and sportsmanship. 

In the Open Category CM Bernard Anhwere emerged victorious, demonstrating outstanding chess prowess to claim the top spot with 7.5 points while WCM Maud Benson took home the title in the women category, solidifying her position as one of the country’s leading female chess players with seven points. 

Meanwhile, Bernard Biney Otoo’s impressive performance earned him the junior championship title, highlighting the bright future of Ghanaian chess. 

Other performers in the open category were Akpa Prince with 6.5 points followed by FM John Hasford with 5.5 points, CM Fomevor Cephas Clinton also with 5.5 points, and Loglo Daniel with five points.  

For the women, Ridham finished second with seven points followed by WCM Gertrude Banini with 5.5 points then Dotse Dzidzor Esi with five points, and Dotse Sumya Ibrahim with 4.5 points 

According to the Ghana Chess Association, the top five in the Open and Ladies categories will represent Ghana as The Golden Knights at the 46th World Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan later this year.
